What is the difference between HTTP and SOCKS proxy?

Theres no big difference between HTTP and SOCKS proxies. Both works using TCP protocol except on SOCKSv5 that can handle UDP connection. Both support the CONNECT method and both support authentication (except for SOCKSv4). Once both proxy types stablish connection to the destination server, they work exactly the same.

Does using a proxy make you anonymous?

Yes, a proxy server can help you to stay anonymous while you are web browsing. A proxy can camouflage your IP and your location, making your internet activities appear to be coming from somewhere else. However, most of time your ISP may still see your web traffic, therefore, for a better protection you should use a VPN.
